How do you decide that something is true?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for April 03, 2008:
I thought "we" decided in March that something was true if it was beautiful? Perhaps this is another truth...the one that crawls down the steps, bubbling and gurgling, as it swats out a tentacle at you. You, of course, run screaming madly for your holy glue gun loaded with a full-spectrum electro-mag. BACK! BACK, UGLY TRUTH! OR I'LL BLAST YOU INTO GLOWING PORKY PUFFS!

The Horror in clay.
“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.”
The call of Cthulhu
H.P. Lovecraft - 1926
Sometimes we have to look into darkness to see the light. Often it is safer and easier to be dark than clear and empty. It can be even more scary to completely open.

ahhhh…i am dark, but i don't think i'm…empty (although i've never thought of it as a safe place: interesting). i had a za zen teacher who was trying to get us to be aware w/o the stream of consciousness distracting us…the concentration w/o concentration. at the time, i wanted to argue with him (how can i be mindful w/o my stream of consciousness???).
i can appreciate his wisdom more now and feel its manifestation when i stare at the treetops against a blue sky ~
I used to really like getting caught up in macabre works but now I have been working on controlling the “tiger” while exploring those dark places. Doing shadow work…. It is really a challenge to not let that rush of adrenaline take over when people around me are screeming. Its about finding the “middle way” for me and working with the seeds of dependent origination in regards to greed, anger, adversivness and delusion. I have had tastes of becoming a sotapanna or stream-enterer working with the fetters of the mind. It has not fully integrated in my life yet….So many distractions can get overwhelming sometimes. See the link for more on this: Sotapanna
I think I also know what you mean by being mindful w/o consciousness. Is it being spaced out and dull-minded? There is a way to work with the four foundations of mindfulness to elevate consciousness with out this but all seven senses have to quieted down in a way for pure consciousness to flow and insight to arise. Through Vipassana
Thanks for the picture and the reminder of the learning from my shadow,

ah, i'm such a neophyte ~ my tigress rages and i like it. i was very mellow reading the sotapanna stuff, then this primal surge of energy flooded over me. tigress says, “NOOOO!”
…but, I will ponder your offerings further ;)
