Artist-Free ~

It's a chilly, pale, overcast winter day here...delicious! great for creative endeavors. The more I learn, the more I realize the amazing diversity of the human mind/spirit. As an artist, I know we make lousy slaves, but it's so interesting to see science back it up, like the Neuroscience study from earlier this year about the differential pre-frontal cortex brain activation of improvising jazz musicians. Pretty cool (and enlightening)!

<zaadz_holding id="104776" />

What is your relationship to waiting?

Ah, there's that time issue again.... Ok, I'll sequentially bite: I can be patient (well, about some things; I'm glad the US election was decided a mere 3 hours after the east coast polls closed). I usually love anticipation, it's waiting for the unexpected to become known to me. I also believe you have to "wait" for some things down the road, as it were, so that all that is necessary to those things down the road can present themselves before those other interesting things.

In reality, of course, all that necessary to present already "is."

Finally! The lines were long, but I only had to wait 2 hours. Everyone came prepared, however: chairs, books, newspapers, ipods, water, snacks. In fact, lots of folks, even teens and kids, were helping out. My favorite helpers were the 3 little boys that walked up and down the massive voting lines serving free snacks and coffee. how cool was that?

As you can see from the video below, the negative spirits stalk, encircle, taunt & terrorize the humans who must defend against them. Tecuani means "the thing that eats/devours" and "the Dance of the Tecuanis" comes from a part of Mexico where people were attacked by animals and spirits, so this dance is part of fighting back.
<zaadz_holding id="102841" />
My favorate ofrenda (offering) however, was the one I photographed at the top: the Marigold Paddler. It was created by Guatemalan artist, Evelyn Orantes, based on a vision she had of a Mayan Day Paddler on the occasion of her 33rd birthday. These paddlers transport the Mayan Corn God in a "celestial canoe" (the Milky Way Galaxy) to and from the worlds of the living and dead during the cycle of day and night.

Is the Marigold Paddler traveling the waters of the living which reflects the sky or the waters of the underworld reflecting the moon? Orantes said that she wanted that to be fuzzy, blurring the line between coporeal and spirit just as the Day of the Dead does.

Do you give yourself enough time?

I try to. I don't like the mad rush that some others do...busy all the time, on the cell phone, racing here and there, etc. I don't want to live like I'm on the stock-market floor.

So, if I feel like things are getting unruly, I'll stop everything (for an hour or a day) and just "be." I burn a lot of mental energy so I sometimes need an insanity break (or is that sanity?). I'll draw a mandala, write some poetry, read a book. One of the reasons that I love public transportation is that it gives you time to kick back before the typical daily grind: watching the clouds go by, pondering rippling water of rivers near train depots, taking a snooze, etc.

I think coming out of the woods where it's silent except for the sounds of nature (fall leaves, babbling brook, etc) makes one reflective. There were no immediate neighbors and my siblings were much older and at school; so, I was with myself (well, and my imaginary friend). One's mind expands so in such a space. One feels vast and connected. That kind of experience probably led to my early childhood contemplations about being in a shell of flesh. It seemed so limited and unnatural and...odd. But, yeah, who are ya gonna tell that to, the other 5 year olds? Ah, but it's cool; I just had to walk my path and they theirs.

Physically? In the midwest snow. It's been a while because I tend to have good balance; I had to walk on uneven ice most of the time in Minnesota. I fall "soft" ~ it's like a slow motion "poof" and I just get up.

I lived in a highrise on a slight hill in Minneapolis proper that was surrounded by a sheet of ice in the winter. I'd have to get a running start to make it up the hill to grab the doorknob before I slid back down the hill (sometimes, that took a few tries); I never fell, though. It was like ice surfin' ---
